Tips for potty training!

October 15th, 2007 · No Comments

Hey guys, I just received this email from a friend and thought it might be helpful to share my answers with you.

Hi, this is about my daughter. She’ll be 3 in December and had been really well potty trained since May. All of April she’d sit on the potty but not go, then as soon as the diaper was on her she would. She initiated it and liked to sit there. One night getting ready for bath she was naked, a little chilly, and hearing the water running was too much! By this point she had really good control from the weeks in April, so she has had very few accidents. For months now she’s been in undies, even when we go out, rarely has an accident, etc. Except for pooping!!! In these past 5 months, never ONCE pooped on the potty!! She used to go only during quiet time, then I stopped putting diapers on her for quiet time and she got herself into only pooping at bedtime. She is like clockwork, holding it until she is in her bed.

I have never rewarded with anything other than stickers, which worked for pee time :-). I thought I was so strong, not bribing with m&m’s (which she loves, but I don’t want to reward with food, my family history has weight issues). But after 4.5 months I caved and the deal is she gets to pick out a new leap pad book when she first poops on the potty. (She’s had her eye on the Thomas Leap Pad book) Nothing has worked, she tells me first thing in the morning that she pooped, and she is very aware of what she’s doing. Tonight I tried a little more urging, we have a doll “pooping” on a doll potty, we talked about the poopy going for a swim-what an imagination she has. Even tried lining her little potty with a diaper, but she acted like I was dumb,—- “diaper not go on potty!” Any ideas? Do I just be patient and eventually she’ll go? I’ve never dealt with a standoff this long before!!
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Nicole

Solution = No more diapers! If she has to wear panties and have
the poop end up going everywhere when she does it in her panties, rather
than the stool, she will not like the feeling and want to use the stool. My
sister was trying to potty train her little one and kept putting her in
pull-ups. Finally my mom and I convinced her that she had to put the
panties on her so the potty would run down her leg and she would be
completely soaked. Once she did that, she was very easy to train.

One other thing, if you don’t want to ‘bribe’ with a piece of candy, how
about using pennies. When I potty trained my youngest, I had a little piggy
bank sitting in the bathroom, and everytime she would go for me, she got to
put a penny in the piggy bank. She loved it.
